Summary
Jerold J. Kreisman & Hal Straus: I Hate You, Don't Leave Me - Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder
What are the basic characteristics and symptoms of BPD? Who are borderline personalities that we meet in our daily life and how to recognize GPL in a close person? How is borderline personality disorder diagnosed and treated and why is it called borderline? (engl. Borderline Personality Disorder – BPL). Why are GPL symptoms most manifested in the sphere of interpersonal relationships? Is GPL curable and how to choose the best therapy? This is precisely what this book, which is an excellent support for professionals, as well as family members or friends of people with GPL, talks about in a professional but understandable way.
In many ways, the borderline syndrome is for psychiatry what the virus used to be for conventional medicine: an imprecise definition of a vague but vicious disease, which is problematic to treat, difficult to detect, and impossible for the doctor to adequately explain the patient.
The latest Diagnostic and statistical manual for mental disorders, DSM-5, lists nine categorical criteria for GPL, five of which must be present for diagnosis. The main characteristic of GPL is high instability in interpersonal relationships, self-concept and emotions, and people are also very impulsive. Some of the symptoms are real or imagined loneliness, unstable and tense interpersonal relationships, insufficient awareness of one's own identity, extreme mood swings and reactions to stressful situations, anger, paranoia, for which the authors have given a number of examples from practice.
Do we all, at least to some extent, exhibit some symptoms of borderline personality? The answer is probably yes. The difference, however, is that not all of us are controlled by the syndrome to the point where it disrupts or rules our lives. With its extreme feelings, thoughts and behavior, GPL represents some of the best and worst human traits - and society - during the first twenty years of the XXI century.
On the importance of understanding this disorder and the need for a serious approach to diagnosis and treatment. In the latest research, it is estimated that at least 19 million Americans (3‒6% of the total population) show primary symptoms of GPL, and according to many studies, this number is significantly reduced.
ABOUT THE WORLD OF BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER (BPD)
The book is an excellent support both for professionals and family members of people with borderline personality disorder. Written in simple language and with respect for patients and everyone who cares for them. Currently, by far the best book on the GPL.
