Summary

Olivera Žižović: Dreams of Mikhail Bulgakov

Olivera Žižović's book Dreams of Mikhail Bulgakov approaches the interpretation of one of the most significant and artistically successful novels of the 20th century, The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, from the perspective of dreams. It is shown that dreams are part of a deeper or higher layer of meaning - depth-psychological, ethical, philosophical and metaphysical - as well as that they contain the key to understanding these levels, helping us to reach the meaningful core of the Master and Margarita. Among other things, they shed light on the "dark places" of Bulgacology and provide their answer to key problems, such as the incompleteness of Bulgakov's "farewell novel" and the question why the Master did not deserve "light" but "tranquility", while illuminating the famous maxims, from the assertion of the devil Voland that "manuscripts do not burn" to Yeshua's (that is, Christ's) observation that "cowardice is one of the greatest vices".

Dreams, moreover, reflect the structure of the novel, appearing on all levels of events: Jerusalem, Moscow and mystical, and through them the basic themes and most important motifs of the Master and Margarita are refracted: from the thematization of the problem of government, its relationship to the individual and the diabolical mechanisms it resorts to and wholeheartedly uses (Nikanor Ivanovich Bosog's dream), through the theme of love - active and passive (Margarita's dream), art and truth (dreams of Ivan the Homeless), to looking at the importance of personality, the theme of redemption, motives of awakened humanity and conscience, as well as the question of the possibility of essential, internal transformation of man and the achievement of freedom (dreams of Pontius Pilate). about good and evil and looks at the relationship of these principles in a new, more fruitful way, calling him not to equate his life in this world with the transitory, banal and relative, but to successfully achieve contact with the infinite, absolute and immortal here and now, which can largely be done precisely through dreams.
