Summary

Branka Prpa: Serbian intellectuals and Yugoslavia 1918 - 1929

In 1918, Yugoslavia is a new toponym on the old geopolitical maps of Europe and unequivocal proof that the First World War fundamentally changed the centuries-old heritage of European nations. In the victorious post-war mapping of European geography, the representatives of the South Slavic peoples participated in solidarity and agreement. They were supposed to do the same work at home in the same way. However, this did not happen. The first decade of the existence of the new state of the South Slavs faced Serbian intellectuals with numerous challenges of living together with other peoples, but also of living together with the old political elites of Serbia, with whom they could not find a common language even before unification. The initial confused hints that politicians are not capable of fulfilling their historical mission in the process of constituting a new state have become a reality. This book, based on numerous archival documents and literature, is rich in information about the opinions and attitudes of Serbian intellectuals about the time in which they lived and created and about the problems of the country whose inhabitants they were. There is not a single more famous academician, university professor, publicist or writer whose arguments are not included in this book, from Jovan Cvijić, Jovan Žujović, Slobodan Jovanović, Ljubomir Stojanović, Milan Grol to Branislav Nušić, Miloš Crnjanski and Justin Popović. Despite their charisma, knowledge and reputation, Serbian intellectuals were powerless in relation to politics. They did not have the necessary party and state structure behind them, and no matter how rational their opinions and proposals were useful, they were not respected. In a country with a poorly developed political culture, almost universal underdevelopment and illiteracy, only on the threshold of democratic processes adopted by the modern world, the idealism of intellectuals was canceled by political interests. Serbian intellectuals were active and engaged participants in history whose fate they could not influence.
