Hillman James | Ventura Michael

Summary

James Hillman, Michael Ventura: One hundred years of psychotherapy - and the world is getting worse and worse

James Hillman, considered by many to be one of the most original psychologists of the 20th century, was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1926. He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, graduated from Trinity College in Dublin, and did his doctorate at the University of Zurich. He obtained a diploma as an analyst at the Jung Institute in Zurich and immediately became the Director of Studies at that Institute, a position he held until 1969. In 1970, he became the editor of "Spring Publications", a famous publishing house that publishes books in the fields of mythology, philosophy, art and archetypal psychology, the founder of which he himself was. Hillman's archetypal psychology developed under the strong influence of the ideas of Heraclitus, Plato, Plotinus, Paracelsus, Ficino, Vico, the Romantics, Nietzsche, Jung, Heidegger and Henry Corbin. Unlike Jung's analytical psychology, archetypal psychology relativizes the ego and focuses on the psyche or soul and on the archaic, deepest patterns of psychic functioning. James Hillman is a very prolific author. Most significant works: Re-Visioning Psychology; The Dreams and the Underworld; The Myth of Analysis; Three Essays in Archetypal Psychology; We've Had a Hundred Years of Psychotherapy - And the World's Getting Worse; Healing Fiction; Kinds of Power: A Guide to its Intelligent Uses; The Soul's Code: A Guide of character and Calling; The Force of Character. He works as an analyst and lectures all over the world. He currently lives in Connecticut, USA.
