Summary

William of Saint-Thierry: The Golden Letter

The Golden Letter (Epistola aurea) is a famous work of Christian spirituality of great influence, which has delighted readers again and again for almost a thousand years. Its author is the famous abbot William of Saint-Thierry, one of the most famous medieval Cistercian monks. The work was created as a letter addressed to the Cistercians from Mont-Dieu, and the teachings about spiritual life
contained in it are still precious today for all those who want to grow in communion with God.

In the book, Vilim interprets the stages of spiritual perfection. Benedict XVI, summarizing William's teachings, pointed out that at the beginning man, through an act of obedience and trust, accepts a view of spiritual life inspired by faith. Then through the process of interiorization, in which reason and will play a major role, faith in Christ is accepted with deep conviction and tested in a harmonious match between what is believed, what is hoped for and the most hidden aspirations of the soul. This is how one reaches the perfection of spiritual life, when religious realities are a source of deep joy as well as real and peaceful communion with God and when one lives only in love and for love. In the Golden Letter, Vilim excellently explains that this perfection is not achieved by personal effort, be it sincere and generous, but by the action of the Holy Spirit, who resides in the soul and purifies, absorbs and transforms into love every love ecstasy and desire present in man. By learning how to open to the Spirit and achieve that love, Vilim learns how to find true joy, a foretaste of eternal bliss.
