Hirc (Hirtz), Miroslav, Croatian ornithologist and herpetologist (Bakar, June 27, 1878 – Zagreb, XI. 13, 1944. He studied natural sciences at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb, where he received his doctorate in 1907. Curator of the Zoological Museum in Zagreb and professor of zoology and hunting at the Forestry Academy in Zagreb; editor of Priroda for ten years. Collected and processed a huge amount of material to present the vernacular nomenclature and terminology of vertebrates Dictionary of vernacular zoological names, in 3 volumes: Amphibians (Amphibia) and reptiles (Reptilia), 1928; Birds (Aves), 1928–47; Pisces, 1956
