Summary
Rainer Zitelmann: Ten Myths about Capitalism
Rainer Zitelmann examines the ten most common objections to capitalism: from capitalism leading to poverty and hunger, increasing inequality, unnecessary consumption, environmental destruction, and all the way to climate change and wars. Capitalism, its critics say, prioritizes profit over humanity, creates dominant monopolies and undermines democracy. Zitelmann examines each of these accusations in turn and reveals the key flaws that debunk them. In proving that it is not capitalism that has failed, but a century of anti-capitalist experiments, he offers counterarguments to each charge, using a wealth of historical evidence and eye-opening facts. The second part of the book explores popular perceptions of capitalism in Europe, the US, Latin America and Asia and is based on a specially commissioned Ipsos MORI survey in 25 countries, the results of which are presented in this book for the first time.
