Summary
Nicholas Fyfe: Street Scenes: Planning, Identity and Control in Public Space
The collection Street Scenes testifies to the vitality, excitement and tensions of the street. Based on leading historical and contemporary research in the fields of cultural geography, cultural studies, sociology and planning, Nikolas Fyfe groups contributions into three main units. The first, Planning and Design, explores how specific streetscapes are shaped by the interplay of dominant ideas in politics, planning, and local economic and political circumstances. The second part, called Social Identities and Social Practices, tries to distinguish social differences in the experience of the street for different people, while the final part, Control and Resistance, focuses on the methods of increasingly emphasized control of social life on the street. This book subjects the street to constant critical scrutiny, enriching and expanding our understanding of the creation and meanings of urban space.
