Kapital i ideologija: prema knjizi Thomasa Pikettyja

Alet Claire | Adam Benjamin

Summary

Claire Alet, Benjamin Adam: Capital and Ideology: According to the book by Thomas Piketty

The graphic novel by author duo Claire Alet and Benjamin Adam is a comic version of the book Capital and Ideology by the French economist Thomas Piketty, author of the book Capital in the 21st Century, the most important book on economics that appeared in the last few years, and which, despite its voluminousness, became a global bestseller. Piketty, undoubtedly the world's leading expert on income and wealth inequality, not only shows how more and more wealth is concentrated in the hands of the economic elite, but also proves that we are moving towards 'proprietary capitalism', in which the economy is dominated by inherited wealth and therefore it is more important where someone was born than how hardworking and gifted they are.

He suggests that the worlds of those who do not have to work and live well, and those who have to work and live badly, are brought closer together. In the graphic novel Capital and Ideology, based on the study of the same name, Piketty encourages the reader to completely change the way he evaluates politics, ideology and history. He exposes the ideas that led to social inequalities in the last millennium, reveals how futile right-wing and left-wing policies are ruining society today and how a new economic model should be structured.

Piketty claims that today's economy is not something that happened naturally, that capital and profit are something that was deliberately created throughout history by some privileged social groups who imposed it on the entire society with the help of ideology. They brought such misfortunes to humanity as serfdom, slave ownership, colonialism, communism. Capital and Ideology is a graphic novel, understandable and accessible to a wide range of readers who are interested in the topic, and which presents Piketty's concepts in an entertaining way without trivializing them.

Claire Alet is the deputy editor-in-chief of Alternatives Economiques magazine, responsible for the French department. A specialist in the topics of eco-consumption, corporate social responsibility and lobbying of all kinds, she joined the editorial staff of the magazine in 2001. She is also interested in the issue of inequality between women and men.

Benjamin Adam is the author of comics and graphic novels. After graduating from the School of Fine Arts in Strasbourg in 2007, he moved to Nantes, where he still lives today, working on group projects (Ecarquillettes, Radar, Oasis, Maison Fumetti) and graphic novels. After numerous publishing projects (Ulysse, Bayard in 2011, with Christine Palluy), he published Lartigues & Prévert, La Pastèque in 2013 and Joker in 2015, all three of which were selected for the Angoulême festival in three separate categories. Since then, he tried his hand at reportage and documentary, publishing in the magazine La Revue Dessinée. In 2019, Dargaud published his sci-fi graphic novel Soon, created in collaboration with Thomas Cadène.
