Summary

Danijela Lugarić: 10th Glossary of the Russian Avant-Garde

The Russian avant-garde is today written about as the "most avant-garde avant-garde" in history, because nowhere else was avant-garde as passionate, diverse and uncompromising as in rebellious and forward-looking Russia from 1910 to 1930. Malevich's Black Square became a global symbol of the great Nothing because it most radically expressed the idea of the death of subject art and the zero state of the world, society and culture. Mihail Larionov used to say: "I'm bored, all the canons of art oppress me. They reek of death and suffocate me... I want to escape from the walls into boundless space, I want to be in constant motion." The modern times we live in show that avant-garde visions of the world, artistically designed to the last logical point, are not outdated. On the contrary, we can identify with the surprising perception of the author from the beginning of the last century in 2021 like never before.

At the famous Sotheby's auction of non-canonical art in Moscow in 1988, Russian avant-garde works achieved previously unimaginable prices, and their copies were bought by Elton John and David Bowie. At a similar time, the jubilee, 10th meeting of scientists gathered around the Zagreb Institute for the Science of Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy is planned. While other scientific circles were just discovering the Russian avant-garde, in our country it had already been conceived and interpreted for a whole decade.

This book offers 22 articles by leading European and domestic researchers-Russianists and Slavists, written in the late 1980s and early 1990s for the never-before-published jubilee volume of the Glossary of the Russian Avant-Garde. Covered with layers of transition dust, the manuscript survived the war in our region, outlived some of the authors represented in the book, and after three decades achieved the right to its "bright future". In a scientific sense, the book is about the Russian avant-garde, but it is much more than that: a cultural-historical document of some other and different times and a sign that transition, at least in some areas of our lives, does not have to have a timeless duration.
