Summary

Dragan Grozdanić: The Republic of Abandoned Dogs

The Republic of Abandoned Dogs grew out of reportage, from newspaper texts written for a printed weekly, always in small print and with limited letter spaces, and always with clear contours of an inferred story, which is then explored and shadowed in a living touch. But from the first cartographic sketches of what would become the Republic, both Dragan (who reluctantly agreed to write and sign the book) and me (who had not yet made a decision in my life that would make it easier for me) cared that the book under the working title Reportage was not just a registered best of published texts, which would be lined up between the covers like domino tiles. We wanted to embody something else, to find meaning in the book, as a book, with the stories that make up the reports, and along the way to bleed the tissue alive, although in our time mostly numb, at the junction of literature and journalism.

Already in the reports of Dragan Grozdanić, the literary heart beats - the texts are richer, gentler, more poetic, more thoughtful than even the best reportage should be. Each original text was already woven from stories, each of which could be, in a way, and is, albeit unwritten, a novel. Dragan sees and feels people and places with his inexhaustible curiosity and dislocated sensibility, and he knows how to quickly print these flashy visions in the weekly grind of newspapers. Grozdanić's Republika was created from a reportage skeleton, filled, coated and inhabited by everything, or at least something, that was quietly lurking behind the original texts. While building the Republic, we only let the stories that had already been started come out once again, a little differently; to find their form beyond the default. And so this somewhat miraculous, somewhat monstrous hybrid of prose, drama and poetry was born; self-referential, metatextual and citational; real, unreal and too real.
