The story takes place in the small town of Ashland in the American state of New Hampshire, once a bustling center of the milling industry, in an area criss-crossed by lakes and rivers. In the polyphony of six voices, this novel gently opens up to us primarily through its female protagonists, who support each other, but whose life dictated unfair conditions from the beginning, despite which they strive to keep life meaningful in a small and remote community. Ashland describes an American family in New England at the end of the last century, its internal dynamics and the life of the female family members, who take upon themselves the upbringing of the children and offer an unusual perspective and insight into the post-industrial society of the American region of New England, which built its economic prosperity on a centuries-old successful timber industry and nurtured a relatively rich life surrounded by tame nature. After the demise of industry, depression and a sense of hopelessness creep into people, and the characters of the novel try to resist the relentless social and economic temptations.
