Summary
Georges Poulet, Marcel Raymond: Correspondence 1950 - 1977
It is first of all about an exemplary friendship in which everyone becomes who they are, in which dialogue becomes an opportunity for both of them to get to know themselves better. Far from trying not to see the differences that divide them, they care to define them clearly, to notice the nuances that do not allow too fast rapprochement. Here, namely, the difference does not mean a conflict but an awareness of complementarity. Let's be clear: since Marcel Raymond and Georges Poulet have dedicated their lives to studies that we call the ambiguous word "criticism", each of them thinks that it is undoubtedly good that Baudelaire or Mallarme are viewed from the point of view of another critic. Therefore, one should not be surprised if their letters belong to "criticism" to the same extent as their writings: this is exactly what justifies their publication.
