Summary
Andrew Ballantyne: Architecture
The story of architecture is perhaps the oldest story of man. It evokes the time of that distant and dark beginning when man from the mysterious, unknown infinity of world space (either under the dome of the distant sky or in the sight of the threatening horizon beyond the local natural abode) marked and fenced off a fragment of the global space for the first time, conquered it for himself, marked and built the first refuge, built by his own hand and wisdom; which then became a habitat; which then became a house; which then became a dwelling; which then became a city; which established itself as a complex life topos from which the built human world arose. The building and the city have become exclusively human places. Understanding this ancient and continuous human game of habitation and design (from the experience of everyday life to the world of work, from worship to artistic creation, from the space of play to the space of entertainment) is an equally exciting task.
