Summary

Ivo Maroević: About Zagreb by the way and with a reason

A selection of texts about Zagreb architecture and urbanism (1970-2005)

Critical and interpretative legacy of prof. of Dr. Ivo Maroević (Stari Grad, 1 October 1937 - Zagreb, 20 January 2007) is significant for several reasons. He is a persistent and committed researcher of urban planning and architecture of the city where he traveled to study, where he spent his life and where he permanently "mapped" the interest and contact zones to which he paid attention. From the coexistence of upper town fortifications and contemporary interpolations that resolved these sensitive connections in various ways and with various results, historical-spatial-social analyzes of the genesis of individual Zagreb squares, through the furnishing of city spaces, the use of tradition in the contemporary context - the range of his interests was large and encompassed many important issues of urban planning, among which, it seems, there are no small or less important topics or areas.

He researched and interpreted historical topics with attitude and today's knowledge without emphasizing the historicism of facts over other, overall meanings of spiritual and public life that greatly influence architectural and urban development. In this constant change, thanks to new knowledge and theoretical reflections, Ivo Maroević successfully preserved and in a certain way defended the dignity of individual monuments, stylistic periods and buildings, while at the same time critically observing and reinterpreting the objects of his research and ideological superstructures that inevitably influenced this never-ending process.
