Summary
Matko Meštrović: From the individual to the general
Wanting to avoid possible misunderstandings and alleviate any justified objections that may be made to this book, I will briefly outline its intentions and its history.
It was created in a practice that did not have it as its goal, in an activity that was and is not professional and which, unfortunately, could not be scientific. Between journalism, nonfiction and literature, it is difficult to establish a specific and reliable methodology of art criticism, but this does not mean that the critic's work as a chronicler cannot lead to such insights and perspectives that perhaps a professional methodology would not allow him to. This methodology does not actually exist, just as there are no firm boundaries for that profession today, if the professional routine is not identified with the profession, but the creative impulses of an activity that must seek its meaning in the lively questioning of its role and the continuous expansion of the boundaries of thought. can more quickly contribute to more correct orientation and reaching clearer views, than gradual scientific work, for which there are usually not even minimum conditions, and the slowness of its pursuit, even if it could be established, would in these circumstances appear to be an irreparable waste of time. But without a doubt, that thoroughness is lost, which will only be compensated for later by the maturation of the culture, once greater possibilities of deepening and harmonizing its historical and social motives are realized.
