Vajkard Janez Valvasor: Croatia
The map of Croatia can be found in Die Ehre des Herzogthums Krain, Vol 4 (at the beginning of Book XII) by Johann Weichard Valvasor. It was printed in a reprint from 1877.
Johann Weichard (Janez Vajkard) Valvasor (Ljubljana, 28.5.1641 - Krško, 19.9. 1693) - Slovenian polymath. Studied rhetoric with the Jesuits in Ljubljana and then traveled to Germany, Italy, Africa, Switzerland, France. From 1670 he studied history, mathematics, archaeology, magic and alchemy in Lyon. In 1672, he copied Wagensberg Castle (Bogenšperk) near Litija, which he turned into a cultural center where he organized a rich collection collected during his travels (10,000 books, then works of art, manuscripts, prints, money, etc.). In the castle, he gathered collaborators (among them Pavle Ritter Vitezović) on the creation of a geographical-historical-ethnographic work on Carniola. In 1678, he founded a workshop and printing house for copper engraving, where he began to publish cartographic, topographical and historiographical works about Carniola and Carinthia. Eventually, due to the high costs, he had to sell both the castle and the collections. The library and the graphic collection were bought in 1690 by the Bishop of Zagreb, Ignacije Mikulić, and thus founded the Metropolitan Library.
