Summary
Giuseppe Rosaccio: Veduta Heceg-Novi
Giuseppe Rosaccio (approx. 1530-1620) Italian cosmographer who worked in Venice. His most famous works are "Teatro del Cielo e Terra Florence" from 1594, the edition of Ptolemy's "Mode elementa" from 1604 and "Teatro del Cielo" from 1615. The most significant for the Croatian countries is his isolare "Viaggio da Venetia a Constantinopoli" with depictions of all major islands and ports on the way from Venice to Constantinople, which saw several editions from 1597 onwards.
The view shows Herceg-Novi, an important fortress in Venetian Dalmatia that was conquered by the Turks in the 16th century. On the view we see Herceg-Novi at the time when it was under Turkish rule. The city is currently under siege by Christian forces who are attacking it from the sea side, trying to liberate it. It is an account of the siege that resulted in the short-term liberation (October 28, 1538-August 28, 1539) of Herceg-Novi. After it was conquered again by the Turks in 1539, it was finally liberated in 1687, after which it was returned to the Venetian Republic.
This veduta by Rosaccio was published in the first edition of Rosaccio's travelogue "Viaggio da Venetia a Constantinopoli per Mare, e per Terra, & insieme quello di Terra Santa" from 1598.
