Petrus Bertius was a professor of mathematics and librarian at the University of Leyden. Besides being a prolific writer on mathematical, historical and theological topics, he is also known as a cartographer for his editions of Ptolemy's Geography. In 1618, he moved to Paris and became Louis XIII's official cosmographer. He was related by marriage to Jodocus Hondius and Pieter van den Keere.
