Veduta Rijeka

Merian Matthaus

Summary

Matthaus Merian- Veduta Rijeka / St. Veit an Flaum

This Merian's view of the city of Rijeka was published in Merian's work "Theatri Europei Oder Historische Beschreibung aller Vornemdsten und denckwurdigsten Geschichten, so sich hin weider in Europa sonderlich im Reich Teucher Nation von Anno 1642 bis Anno 1647.". Merian's veduta was created on the basis of a similar Coronelli of that city. The focus of the presentation is on the fortification system of the city of Rijeka. The city had an irregular quadrilateral layout. The city castle is significantly oversized, and the spatial arrangement of individual city palaces is not faithfully shown. Moats around the city also did not exist. The Rječina River flows to the left of the fortified town, above which rises Trsat with its fortress. The city gardens are shown to the left of the city. The relief is indicated very schematically, with shaded molehills. Of the old forts of Rije gradaka, very little has been preserved today. Certainly the most famous witness of those times is the sea city gate, over which there is a clock tower, today one of the most famous symbols of the city of Rijeka.

Matthaus Merian (1593-1650) German topographer, graphic artist and publisher. He studied in Zurich and worked in Frankfurt. His most famous work is "Theautrum Europeam...", which went through several editions in the period from 1629 to 1718, and "Archeologica Cosmica", also with several editions published in the period from 1638 to 1649.
