Summary

Janis Varoufakis: What I Told My Daughter About Economics

This book is an intimate address by Varoufakis to his daughter who lives thousands of kilometers away and to whom he wants to explain the beginnings of economics. He who cannot explain difficult concepts to young people in simple language simply does not understand them well enough himself. This is as true for black holes at the edge of the universe as it is for public debt black holes and banking conundrums. So, the father is trying to tell a story about the economy that will not be boring to his daughter and her peers and that will at the same time show them the origins of the modern world and the causes of its current problems. In an imaginary conversation with his daughter, Varoufakis addresses himself by asking unusual but important questions and then answering them:

- Why did the British colonizers attack Australia, but the Aborigines did not attack England?
- When and how was the power of profit born?
- Why would the appearance of wealth never be possible without debt?
- Where does the unacceptable power come from? banks?
- What is hidden behind economic crises?
- Is there any hope that humanity will stop behaving
like a mindless virus poisoning an organism that provides
hospitality?
- What is money and why does it "need" democracy?

Janis Varoufakis was born in 1961 in Athens. He received his PhD from the University of Essex and then taught at universities in Great Britain, Australia, Belgium, the USA and Greece. He is now the head of the Department of Political Economy at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Athens. He wrote several books in the field of economics. Since the beginning of 2015, he held the position of the Greek Minister of Finance and participated in difficult negotiations regarding the Greek debt to the European Union and the IMF. He resigned as minister before the end of the negotiations.
