Summary
Bill Reid, Robert Bringhurst: The Raven Steals the Light
An elegant reissue of the timeless collection of Haida myths, first published in 1984, with a new foreword by Claude Lévi-Strauss, who wrote: As the fruit of an inspired collaboration between artist and poet, this book opens us to their seductive power, their charm and freshness.
Ten masterful drawings by Bill Reid accompany ten episodes from Haida mythology, which retold by Bill Reid and Robert Bringhurst. This combination brings Haida art and mythology to life in a completely different way. Over the centuries, Native Americans of the Northwest Coast of the American continent developed graphic and sculptural conventions and used stylistic devices to mix, intertwine, and reshape human and nonhuman features. Their reality is made up of characters who are neither human nor animal, but both represent great protectors, but sometimes also difficult opponents of the members of the tribe.
