Dictionary of Serbian folk beliefs about plants, first published posthumously in 1985, represents the most extensive and systematic study devoted to local ethnobotanical representations in Serbian science so far. About folk knowledge and beliefs about the magical and healing properties of plants, Čajkanović says: "The religion of plants and trees was very developed among the ancient Serbs. In this regard, the Serbs are, admittedly, no exception compared to other peoples, among whom plants and trees, in distant antiquity, also had a great reputation; however, the fact that the Serbs have preserved more and clearer remains of this religion than in many other peoples..."
