Ilija Marić: Notes on Kiš and philosophy

Our old impression that Kiš's prose and essays are imbued with philosophy is actually a consequence of the presence of certain metaphysical topics that he often talked about in his interviews. Nevertheless, he approached these topics in the manner of an artist, a writer, a "commoner", and not a professional philosopher. Hence our later insight that in Kiš's texts we rarely come across philosophy in the strict sense of the word. […] Nevertheless, in most cases, Kiš reaches for the viewpoints of individual philosophers when he considers poetic or ethical questions or, as he would say, when he touches on poetics. At the same time, it is characteristic that he is not interested in philosophical positions per se, in their original context and meaning, but always uses them to support or illustrate his own understanding or claim. Therefore, it is somewhat missed to point out that the views of the great thinkers he refers to do not always have the meaning he attaches to them. He simply uses them more freely for his own needs, and not for an academic discussion about their original meaning.
