Summary

Plato: Meno or On Virtue

"Well, if the truth of things always exists in our soul, our soul must be immortal. That is why we must be brave; and what we do not know now, that is, what we have lost our memory of, we must bravely seek and find our memory again."

One of Plato's earliest dialogues, the Meno, follows a conversation between Socrates and the young aristocrat Meno about the nature of virtue. Through the discussion of whether virtue can be learned, the dialogue develops into a deeper exploration of fundamental questions: what virtue is, how we define abstract concepts, and how we acquire knowledge. When Menon points out the paradox of the impossibility of searching for something we do not know, Socrates introduces the theory of knowledge as the soul's memory of the truths it already knows.

The text deals with key philosophical topics such as the nature of definition, the relationship between knowledge and virtue, and the difference between correct thinking and true knowledge. Although the dialogue ends with a typical Socratic aporia - an admission of ignorance - it lays the groundwork for understanding the epistemology and ethics that have shaped Western philosophical thought.
