DROBNIČ, Josip (Drobnić, Jožef), writer and lexicographer (Sveta Ema na Sutla, 18. IV. 1812 — Graz, 5. VIII. 1861). He finished high school in Celje, lyceum in Graz, seminary in Celovac and was ordained a priest in 1839. He was a chaplain in Lower Styria, and in 1849 he became a high school teacher in Celje. Due to poor health, he retired in 1852. He lived in Trieste and taught at Vehovar's private institute, and from 1857 he was a teacher of the Slovenian language at the grammar school in Graz. — Under the influence of doctor Š. Kočevara was delighted with Illyrianism, and from 1838 he cooperated and corresponded with S. Vraz, for whom he collected folk songs (Narodne pdsni ilirske, 1839). In this spirit, he compiled a compilation Illyrian-German-Italian dictionary of the Styrian-Croatian mixture, which J. Blaznik refused to print. The manuscript was accepted by Matica Ilirska, so it was published in 1846–49 after revisions and additions by A. Mažuranić (also adding Italian equivalents) and V. Babukić. with Babukić's short Illyrian grammar in German and Italian under the name Illyrian-German-Italian small dictionary. For practical purposes, it contained material from older Croatian dictionaries (Belostenčeva, Jambrešić, Stulić, Voltić; Mažuranić also included part of Della Belli's words), and more recently the authors used Richter-Ballmann's and Mažuranić-Užarević's dictionaries and dictionaries material that Mažuranić added to Gundulić's Osman edition from 1844. Later, D. also published Slovensko-German-Italian in Italiano-German-Slovenski besednjak. After the coup of 1848, he was a leading figure in Slovenian social and cultural life in Celje: in 1850 he started and edited Slovenska čbela, the first literary and educational paper in Slovenian language, founded a reading room in 1851, prepared theater plays with J. K. Jeretin, translated and adapted German theater plays (Dvoboj in Raztresenca, 1850; Venec gladiliških iger, 1859) and Kukuljević's Croatian plays (Juran in Zofija ali Turki pri Sisku, Štefan Šubic ali Bela IV na Croatia). Collaborated in News of agricultural, handicraft and folk sayings (1845, 1849, 1857), Drobtinica (1848), Slovenian Friend (1856) etc. In Slomšek's book Repeat the necessary teachings for Sunday schools on peasants (1854) he wrote a chapter from of geography.
