Summary

Mate Kapović: Introduction to Phonology

This book does not pretend to cover everything that can be said about phonology, nor does the author take the view that what is in this book is the only possible approach to phonology and the only possible introduction to it, but the content and approach of the book includes what the author of the book thinks someone should master when getting acquainted with phonology? especially if he wants to deal with language description, field research, dialectology or historical linguistics. The emphasis in the book is on the practical side of phonology, concrete analysis and numerous examples from many languages (with a detailed analysis of Croatian phonology as a necessary first step), and not on an abstract consideration of many formal approaches. The author pays great attention to articulatory phonetics (without which there is no phonology), and he tries to contextualize phonology dialectologically, diachronically, sociolinguistically and typologically. The book you are holding in your hand is intended as a practical introduction to phonology (a linguistic discipline that deals with sounds in the language) for speakers of Croatian (and beyond) who are interested in the language or deal with it professionally - for linguists, Croatists (including standardologists and spellers), dialectologists, sociolinguists, but also for all those interested. If you are interested in all the voices (and accents) around you in Croatia, but also in the wider region and in the world, where and how they are pronounced, what those voices are, how they are analyzed and written down - this is the book for you. The book, based on a large number of world languages but always keeping in mind our mother tongue, explains how voice systems behave, analyze and change, and provides an insight into the wealth of phonological systems around the world along with an overview of contemporary world literature. In addition, the book provides a detailed analysis of some of the problems of Croatian phonology that have so far been poorly addressed, such as the problem of the phoneme /j/ or the complex development, pronunciation and writing of the so-called reflections of the flock (standard).
