This book does not pretend to cover everything that can be said about phonology, nor does the author take the view that what is in this book is the only possible approach to phonology and the only possible introduction to it, but the content and approach of the book includes what the author of the book thinks someone should master when getting acquainted with phonology? especially if he wants to deal with language description, field research, dialectology or historical linguistics. The emphasis in the book is on the practical side of phonology, concrete analysis and numerous examples from many languages (with a detailed analysis of Croatian phonology as a necessary first step), and not on an abstract consideration of many formal approaches. The author pays great attention to articulatory phonetics (without which there is no phonology), and he tries to contextualize phonology dialectologically, diachronically, sociolinguistically and typologically.
