Summary
Titus Maxia Plautus: Gemini (Menechmi)
If we tried to retell the beginning of Plautus's famous comedy Gemini, it could sound like this: "Having quarreled with a woman, Nebojša (Menaechmus) from Epidamnos takes her fur coat and goes to his mistress. On the way, he meets the parasite Briska (Peniculus) whom he feels sorry for and invites him to have lunch together at Ljubinka's (Erotium)". which is already funny because of Jelena Todorović's witty translation. But laughter, as in any great comedy, is only a way to point to something more complex than laughter itself. At the level of composition, Plautus not only introduced new elements into Roman comedy, divided space and built roles in a specific way (which J. Todorović writes about in an exhaustive preface), but also told us a lot about Roman society and human nature.
