Milan Begović: The Man of God
In the extensive multi-genre oeuvre of the classic of modern Croatian literature Milan Begović (1876 - 1948), the play The Man of God (Zagreb 1924) occupies one of the central places. In three acts, this mystical-religious, expressionist drama unfolds the love triangle between the hajduk Krstan, the priest Damjan and the girl Mara. This play had its premiere in the Zagreb theater in 1924, and along with the author's other most successful dramatic works, it experienced considerable international reception: it was performed first in Brno (1925), then in Prague in 1926 and 1943, Bratislava in 1927 and 1939, and in the USA in 1927/28. and 1932/33. Attached is a theater review by Miljenko Bukarica published immediately after the Zagreb premiere under the title "Begović's God's Man: Repentance, Forgiveness and Love".
