Thomas Mann's first novel and one of the most significant works of pre-war German literature. The novel tells about the decline of the bourgeoisie, which is shown through the downfall of a respectable merchant family.
The novel takes place in Lübeck, the hometown of Thomas Mann, and follows the downfall of the rich and respectable Buddenbrock merchant family through several generations in the 19th century. The author portrays the internal states of the characters and their internal conflicts in an extraordinary way. Each character has its own peculiarities, and in each character we recognize a family resemblance. At the heart of the novel are events and characters from the third generation of the Buddenbroks.
