Arthur Schnitzler: Casanova's Return
The legendary seducer Giovanni Giacomo Casanova is approaching old age and feels an increasing nostalgia for his native Venice. On the way from Mantua, he stops by his old acquaintance Oliva, where his young, extremely beautiful and highly educated niece Marcolina is staying. At the end of his "career", the hangman affords himself one last adventure that awakens the dream of finally finding great love, not shying away from reaching for the entire arsenal of his tried and tested tricks, reinforced by the awareness that this is the twilight of life after which there is no dawn, no new adventures. The impoverished Casanova is at a crossroads in his life, because he has no income and his future is extremely uncertain. He expects salvation from the Venetian Great Council, but the outcome is more than uncertain. At the same time, he has a hard time coming to terms with the inexorable process of aging and yearns for at least one more, the most dazzling adventure in the arms of a beautiful woman...
