Summary

Donald James: The Fortune Teller

The return to his native Murmansk, after gruesome experiences on a "special assignment" in civil war-ravaged Moscow, should be an idyllic honeymoon for Inspector Konstantin Vadim with Natalya. But Russia in the not-so-distant future is not exactly an ideal place for a newly married couple. Vadim's police duties bring him into contact with the local underworld. Drugs, alcohol and all forms of crime flourish in Murmansk, where the political and economic oligarchy hold bacchanalia while the majority starve. Long hours of service and low pay, miserable resources for work, are common daily experiences of both Konstantin and Natalia, but they are happy together.
When Natalia is called for emergency medical intervention, Vadim is not worried at first because there have been such cases before. But when it turns out that the call was fake and that no one knows where his wife is, a large-scale search will be launched, especially when it is established that the employee of the American consulate also disappeared at the same time. Vadim will get a partner from the FBI, their joint investigation will encounter insurmountable obstacles, and a desperate Vadim will hire a gypsy fortune teller. The British logic of an American woman will oppose the superstitious intuition of a distraught Russian in an attempt to discover an opponent who is both crazy and brilliant.
Translated by Alenka Mirković and illustrated by Nenad Martić, The Fortune Teller is the second novel in a series about Inspector Konstantin Vadim, by award-winning British historian Donald James.
