Summary

Ovidius Nazon, Publius (Publius Ovidius Naso [pu:'bli·us owi'di·us na:'so]), Roman writer (Sulmon, today Sulmona, 20. III. 43. BC – Tomi, today Constanţa, ? 17). Originating from a respectable provincial family of chivalry, he was educated in Rome, where he initially held lower positions in the public service, but soon devoted himself entirely to poetry. Emperor Augustus exiled him to the Black Sea coast in the 8th year; as the reason for the exile, Ovid himself cites a "song" - certainly the Art of Love (Ars amatoria) - and a "mistake" - probably involvement in an unknown scandal in the imperial family. Although at the time of his exile Ovid was considered the greatest living Roman poet, neither Augustus nor his successor Tiberius pardoned him for the rest of his life.

Ovid created easily and quickly: his legacy exceeds 30,000 verses. In addition to the lost tragedy of Medea, his youthful works include love elegies, which he began to write when he was eighteen (Ljubavne pjesme - Amores, known today according to the second edition, around 16 BC).

Heroides is a collection of fictitious epistles in elegiac distichs addressed by mythical heroines to their absent husbands or lovers.

Betondić, Josip, Croatian poet and translator (Suđurađ na Šipan, 2 June 1709 – Dubrovnik, 4 January 1764) He was educated in Jesuit schools in Dubrovnik. Lived mainly in Pelješac. Author of the Christmas pastoral, Conversation of a Shepherd at Christmas and several satirical poems, of which only two have been preserved. His works were not printed during his lifetime. He was also involved in copying the works of older Dubrovnik poets, translated and paraphrased Ovid, Virgil and Cato, Latin works with religious themes and Molière's comedies, and collected Bulgarian texts.
