Chingiz Aitmatov: And the day lasts longer than a century
In the novel "And the day lasts longer than a century" by the Kyrgyz-Russian writer Chingiz Aitmatov, the Kazakh legend about the making of mankurt, i.e. a special type of slave, leaves a special impression. A kind of nomadic people from long ago, forcibly taking the lands of other peoples, used a special method to turn prisoners of war into completely harmless slaves. With a very simple and cruel method, man was made into a speechless creature, and the master did not have to fear rebellion in the future, unlike uncultivated slaves who, due to their preserved self-awareness, always have such a possibility.
