Šantić Aleksa

Summary

Aleksa Šantić: Selected Poems

Unlike other Serbian modernists who were formatively influenced by French literature, Aleksa Šantić was more inclined to German literature, which he brought closer to readers in this climate through numerous translations - of Heine, Schiller, Goethe and others. In this way, Šantić was one of the first, through German expressionism, to foresee and introduce avant-garde tendencies into our literature. Tin Ujević praised Šantić's language, style and form, Miloš Crnjanski praised his "cosmopolitan nature", while Skender Kulenović saw him as a "dignified poet of pain". Recognizable for his tercities, Šantić, with a wide range of topics, invites a re-reading of the classic works of our poets from the beginning of the twentieth century.
