Returning from lunch one day, Hercule Poirot finds an angry woman outside his house. She demands an explanation as to why Poirot sent her a letter accusing her of murdering Barnabas Pandy, a man she had never heard of or met.
Poirot had never heard of Barnabas Pandy or accused anyone of murder. Upset, he enters the house to find a visitor waiting for him - a man who also claims to have received a letter that morning accusing Poirot of murdering Barnabas Pandy.
Poirot wonders how many more such letters have been sent in his name. Who sent them and why? More importantly, who is Barnabas Pandey, is he dead, and if dead, was he murdered? Can Poirot find the answers without putting another life in danger?
