Summary

Petar Zoranić: Planine (reprint from 1569)

Reprint edition: In Venetia : Apresso Domenico Farri, in contrata di S. Antonio, 1569 (taken from the only known copy of the 1st edition preserved in the JAZU library)

Bibliophile edition in leather.

Petar Zoranić's work is considered the first novel in Croatian literature in general, and we can consider it a pastoral novel according to the genre.

"Mountains" consists of parts of prose and verse and all of this is composed in 24 chapters. The model in which Zoranić found inspiration is the work "Arcadia" from 1504 by Italian Jacopo Sannazar, who writes about a similar theme, a poet who in the form of a shepherd flees because of unrequited love in Arcadia.
The main theme of Zoranić's work "Mountains" is the author's journey through northern Dalmatia. He sets out on a journey because of his unhappy love and the pain he feels, and he believes that by traveling he will be freed from the same. On the way, he meets shepherds who tell him stories about the origin of the homeland that surrounds him. That's how they tell him about the origin of Velebit, Nin, Zadar, Privlaka, Dinara and Krka. They also tell him stories about various phenomena that are typical for the area, such as storms, sing love songs and talk about metamorphoses.
