Summary

Faruk Šehić: Under Pressure

The book of short stories Under Pressure is an autofiction account of the war fought in Bihać District (Bosnian Region), as well as a prose chronicle of post-war life in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is based on the experience of the author, his comrades, but also on the heritage and experience of war and post-war hopelessness of many other world writers with similar biographies, such as Apollinaire, Hemingway, Herbert... If we add the spices of fiction, we get a ruthless book that leaves no one indifferent.

The book is written in short, clear sentences, sometimes in a telegram style that is poetic and metaphorical. This style is brutal and gentle at the same time. It alternates between urban and rural slang mixed with plenty of allusions, quotes and associations to movies, music, high and low literature. The author's intention was to show the war through the eyes of the camera that is on the shoulder of his heroes and the narrator, so that the reader can feel everything: to see and smell the war (gunpowder, blood and mud) as if it were happening to him right now. It describes the war from within (within the hero) and from without. It shows the revolutionary power of war as an upheaval and disintegration of civilized society and its norms. The characters within such a time and space do not have angelic faces.

The book Under pressure has been translated into seven world languages and in many elections it has been declared as one of the best war/anti-war books that thematize the wars caused by the collapse of the former state. Someone long ago wrote that writing poetry after Auschwitz is like playing Bach with a chainsaw. This is exactly such a prose book.
