Summary
Peter Esterhazy: Auxiliary verbs of the heart
The central narrative backbone of this postmodernist novel is a fairly direct representation of the death of the narrator's mother, and thus the action begins with her death and funeral. At the same time, through acquaintance with other family members (father, sister, brother), intricate family relationships are fragmentarily reconstructed. The narrative fabric is densely interwoven with the narrator's emotional observations, colorful quotes from various literary sources, and even segments of the dream technique, and is characterized by frequent changes in time perspectives and the narrator's position. In addition to the universal theme of death, the author is also preoccupied with social situations in Hungary.
