Edmund Spencer: Travels in European Turkey
First edition. The first of two volumes. Contents of the first volume and a list of illustrations of both volumes at the beginning of the book. Publishing advertisements (one part of them is printed on a smaller format) at the end of the book. Illustrated - the graphic on the page opposite the cover, with protective foil, shows the Arnaut camp. The vignette on the cover shows a Turkish khan. In addition to the mentioned two illustrations, the list of illustrations includes a map of European Turkey, but it is missing. Travelogue from a trip through the European part of the Ottoman Empire, undertaken in 1850. The author sympathizes with the Christian nations under the Ottoman rule and believes that the Ottoman rule did nothing regarding the development of the observed region. Spencer, Edmund
Edmund Spencer - British travel writer, captain. Prolific travel writer of the mid-19th century. Lived in Prussia for a while. The first travelogue, Sketches of Germany and the Germans, with a glance at Poland, Hungary, & Switzerland in 1834, 1835, and 1836, by an English resident of Germany, was published in 1836. In the same year, his English translation of the German sketch-book, Tutti Frutti, by the German travel writer Hermann Pückler-Muskau was published. A travelogue from his second big trip - Travels in the Western Caucasus, including a Tour through Imeritia, Mingrelia, Turkey, Moldavia, Galicia, Silesia and Moravia in 1836 - was published in 1838, and based on that trip he published several more books. The book in question, in two volumes, is a travelogue from his third big trip. After that, he published in 1866, also in two volumes, a travelogue from his last big trip - Travels in France and Germany in 1865 and 1866, Including a Steam Voyage down the Danube, and a Ride across the Mountains of European Turkey from Belgrade to Montenegro.
