Summary

Lawrence Durell: Reflections on the Sea Venus: A Guide to the Rhodes Landscape

Reflections on the Sea Venus is a unique testament to Rhodes in the late 1940s. Combining fiction, travelogue and reportage, Darrell guides the reader through the nature of Rhodes, introduces him to its colorful inhabitants, but also to the layers of history that have been deposited on the island for centuries. Darrell's stylistic skills are characterized by bold metaphors, insightful observations, unusual and striking comparisons, so he quite easily manages to bring to life before the reader every segment of Rhodes' history with vivid storytelling, starting with the description of the fate of the statue of the Venus of the Sea, through the siege of Rhodes and the construction of the siege apparatus of Helepolis, from which the famous Colossus originates, to the medieval traces of the rule of the Knights of the Order of St. the occupation of the island and the post-war years when the writer stayed there. In Reflections on the Sea Venus Darrell does not save his lavish style only for the descriptions of the Colossus of Rhodes, he does not spare it when it comes to the speller Manolis or the village fair, so drama and excitement run through all parts of the text and soften its thematic heterogeneity.
