Bebek Borna

Summary

Borna Bebek: Santhana

»I wondered what it means to travel. It can be understood as changing the location, the environment, but such a definition is only somewhat accurate. Defined as changes in human consciousness, induced by external sensual stimuli, travel as a concept would be fully explained. In order to travel at that level, you need to mentally open yourself up to the changes in smells and vibrations emitted by new landscapes, people, earth, insects... That's why I didn't plan my trip. I wanted to throw myself blindly into Asia, open and unreserved, with a brain like a dry sponge. Only in this way, I thought that I would experience and see something that would be really relevant to my questions.«
So writes prof. Ph.D. Borna Bebek, Heidelberg and London postgraduate, professor at Zagreb's Faculty of Economics, traveler and adventurer, who wrote the biggest Croatian (and Yugoslav) new age hit in those unforgettable days of the "black and white world" with Željko Malnar in Search of the Glass City (1986). But back in 1979, Bebek independently published the related "adventure-travel and philosophical-documentary" book Santhan, which, despite its popularity at the time, somewhat undeservedly remained in the shadow of the later bestseller. Santhana contains all the components that captivated the readership of The Glass City: it is simultaneously fiction and nonfiction, a travelogue and an anthropological essay, an adventure novel and a "documentary", an autobiography and a spiritual measurement of the world: a critique of a world that has changed a little since then, and if it has, it's probably not for the better.
Although conditioned by the trends of the time that arrived from the West and drove young people to the East, this intriguing text shows the lucidity of the author who exposes the banality of idle "bourgeois", Overland freaks who, in search of meaning and self-knowledge, mostly learned about drugs and the perversion of authentic Asian wisdom. Bebek's approach is different, aware and analytical, so while he introduces us to exotic people and regions of Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Thailand, Mauritius and India, we witness the exciting situations of the cruel "Wild East", as well as the mystical effects of the true Orient.
