Summary
Jose Saramago: The Journey of an Elephant
A fascinating story about an elephant, its keeper and their journey through medieval Europe based on a true event. Due to its significance and literary message, The Elephant's Journey can undoubtedly be called Saramago's testamentary work. In 1551, King João III of Portugal sent Archduke Maximilian an unusual wedding gift: an Indian elephant accompanied by its keeper, which until then had been languishing neglected on the grounds of the palace in Lisbon. In Saramago's literary interpretation of this historical event, the caravan led by the Archduke himself and his wife, with squires and ox carts pulling food for the elephant, slowly sets off on its way - through Portugal and Spain, by sea to Italy, and across the Alps to Imperial Vienna, where the Archduke dines in the House of Habsburg. A triumph of Saramag's virtuoso style, imagination and humor, The Elephant's Journey is an enchanting and wise story about the permanence of friendship and the transience of fame.
