Summary
Keiko Furukura is 36 years old and has worked as a saleswoman in a mini-market for exactly half of her life. This is the only place where she feels like she has a purpose and for the first time in her life she is integrated into her surroundings. Following the rhythm of daily business duties and copying the appearance, behavior and speech of her colleagues, Keiko almost perfectly hid her awkwardness in the world of adults and adapted.
However, as the years pass, the pressure of society on her to get married, have children and find a better job becomes more and more uncomfortable, forcing Keiko to take some rather unusual actions.
A brilliant novel about misfit and misunderstanding shown through the psyche of the unforgettable title character became a huge hit. in Japan with more than 650,000 copies sold, and then it was translated into 20 languages, and in England and America it was on the best-seller lists for weeks.
