Houellebecq Michel

Summary

Michel Houellebecq: Expanding the field of struggle

The hero or anti-hero of Michel Houellebecq's first and immediately cult novel, Expanding the field of struggle, turned thirty years old. As an IT specialist, he earns two and a half times more than the average salary. Despite such purchasing power, he does not attract women. Deprived of beauty and charm, prone to frequent depressions, he does not correspond to what women are primarily looking for in the market for sex or narcissistic gratification. As a disqualified player but also a penetrating observer of modern life, he also describes the life of people related to him, their frantic search for a little more pleasure, a little more love, a little more money. This struggle has spread to all spheres of existence under the influence of the liberal model of life, and refuge cannot be found even in bed. Sexuality is, on the contrary, only a link in the chain of the system of social hierarchy... In this devastating, infuriating and even funny novel, which was made into a film and staged a theatrical play, Houellebecq says in a few sentences what sociologists, philosophers, economists or historians never knew or could say about the modern individual and the liberal world that surrounds him. Born in 1958, Michel Houellebecq, poet, essayist and novelist, is the leader of the new generation of French writers. With the trilogy of novels (Expansion of the combat area, Elementary particles and Platforma - all translated into Croatian), he achieved worldwide success, but also divided criticism, surprised readers and involved the judiciary. Translated into more than thirty languages.
