Lethem Jonathan

Summary

Jonathan Lethem: Fortress of Solitude

"Fortress of Solitude" is an ambitious and emotionally powerful novel by the American writer Jonathan Lethem, which combines coming of age, racial tensions, popular culture and magical realism into a story of friendship and identity.

The plot follows Dylan Ebdus, a white boy who grows up in a predominantly black neighborhood of Brooklyn in the 1970s, where he faces isolation, racism, class differences and own internal insecurities. The focus is also on his complex relationship with his friend Mingus Rude, the son of a failed soul musician, with whom he shares childhood, music and – one surreal element: a magic ring that gives the power of invisibility.

Lethem combines realism and the fantastic, autobiographical and political, creating a layered novel about childhood, growing up and the loss of innocence in an America full of contradictions.
