Summary
Vahid Duraković: The Curse
"In sharp satirical tones, Duraković portrays a government steeped in corruption, as well as the servility, hypocrisy, cruelty and recklessness of ordinary people from the provincial milieu. The storytelling captivates with an abundance of subtle observations, linguistically carefully nuanced dialogues, sparkling humor and anecdotal crafts. Skillful composition of each of these stories, the consistent construction of the plot with realistic gray tones and unexpected plots, as if it were a template for some kind of movie omnibus, combines the condensed life details of the protagonists, which evoke the atmosphere of the local environment, with the bare, reporter's recording of facts. In portraying people from the social margins, alienated in their environment and spiritually disintegrated under its pressure, Duraković is a subtle and penetrating psychologist who precisely analyzes the manners, customs and habits of society, giving a grotesque picture of their moral misery and depravity. Where Duraković faithfully reproduces a specific native lexicon, he introduces humor from everyday sources into the narrative. The subtle gift of observation and direct knowledge of the local residents' mentality is reflected in the details of the experience, which are subtly captured and invite the reader to dwell on them as if they were independent verses. In the descriptions, stylistic figures are used extremely economically, and sensory sensations are often chained and condensed to the extreme limits of tension. The tragic fate of Duraković's heroes, who are in constant conflict with the environment they live in, becomes the "curse" that follows them: the curse is marked by the small people who are searching for moral values in a world from which they have been irrevocably expelled.
with his debut, the collection of short stories "Curse", Vahid Duraković confirms himself as an excellent storyteller, who revives the best tradition of Gogol's novella in a contemporary Bosnian style."
