Summary
Jun'ichiro Tanizaki: In Praise of the Shadow - An Essay on Aesthetics * Key
Jun'ichiro Tanizaki (1886 – 1965) is one of the few most important Japanese writers of the 20th century. In his almost lyrical prose In praise of the shadow, Tanizaki dreams and mourns in a shrewd and interesting way over the already weakened and forgotten traditions of Japan's westernized society, writing some of the most beautiful pages of Japanese literature in general. In the short novel Ključ, a husband and wife use their diaries as a means of communicating with each other, by secretly reading each other notes about erotic fantasies, pretending that they are not doing it. Shortly after its publication, the novel became very popular, so a movie was made twice based on it.
