Summary
Česta Bibertal: Zabuna života
The manuscript of the autobiographical novel Zabuna života reached us with an extremely unusual request. If we decide to publish it, one of the conditions of the copyright holder, the author's widow, was that we publish the book under a pseudonym. Her decision stemmed from the desire to protect the name of her husband, a distinguished Serbian intellectual, from slander, as well as herself from potential embarrassment. Intrigued by this unusual request, we started reading the manuscript and an extremely exciting chronicle of the social, political and cultural life of Croatia in the previous few decades opened before us. Speaking mercilessly about himself and others, the narrator creates a truthful picture of a terrible time, marked by the unimaginable cruelty of two wars, but also by inter-ethnic turmoil and conflicts that have not subsided even to this day. The novel Zabuna života is probably the best written book about the position of Serbs in Croatia, after which we see the issue of Serbian-Croatian relations in a completely new light. Respecting the widow's wishes, we hand you the book Zabuna života, believing that it will not leave you indifferent, just as it did not leave us either.
