The book "DER PALAST DIOCLETIANS IN SPALATO" was published by Georg Niemann in 1910 in Vienna. Two years later the French: the architect Ernest Hebrard and the historian Jacques Zeiller printed the book "SPALATO LE PALAIS DE DIOKLETIEN" in Paris. These two works represent the most thorough depictions of the preserved parts and the original condition of Diocletian's Palace in Split at the end of the nineteenth century. As work on the study, research and restoration of Diocletian's Palace has revived in recent years, the need arose to use the results of earlier research as much as possible in these interventions. In 1991, the Split architect Mirjana Marasović translated Niemann's book about Diocletian's Palace into Croatian, with the help of archaeologist Branimir Gabričević and architect Ana Grubić. The big celebration of the birth of the city in the Palace is the right occasion to finally publish the translation of Niemann's book in the beautiful way that the nineteenth century did it. In addition to the enormous effort invested in each architectural shot, the harmony and beauty of the drawn drawings is admirable, and it should be known that the research of the palace was at a much lower level than today. Today, with the relief brought by the modern technique of digital records and direct transfer to a computer, it would be difficult to create drawings that are so captivating with their beauty. For this, in addition to immense architectural knowledge, the gift of a visual artist is needed.
This book is a reprint of the original Austrian edition in an almost identical format of 48 x 33 cm on fine paper that evokes the texture and color of the old book.
